Senior Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi delivered a fiery speech at the “Constitutional Challenges: Perspectives and Pathways” conclave, accusing the BJP of twisting India’s Constitution into a tool of domination and vowing to prevent the nation from becoming a “one voice, one party, one ideology” state. Addressing a packed Vigyan Bhawan, Singhvi warned that democracy is under siege, with constitutional values like liberty, equality, and fraternity “gasping for air.”
“Democracy dies when institutions become partisan puppets, media turns into a megaphone, and dissent is branded anti-national,” Singhvi declared, alleging the BJP is replacing constitutional checks with “cheques and bulldozers” and rights with “raids and rhetoric.” He criticized the government’s “coercive federalism,” claiming it treats states like “colonies of compliance,” withholding funds and destabilizing elected governments through “money, muscle, and manipulation.”
Singhvi urged a multi-pronged fight to reclaim Parliament as a space for genuine debate, demand judicial intervention, free the media from fear, and reconnect the Constitution with citizens from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. “This is not just a legal battle but a moral struggle,” he said, calling for a sustained Satyagraha to counter what he termed a “constitutional coup.” He emphasized Congress’s historical role in shaping India’s democratic spirit and its duty to revive it, ensuring the Preamble’s pulse is felt nationwide.

The conclave, attended by legal scholars, opposition leaders, and civil society, highlighted concerns over centralized governance and eroding federalism. Singhvi’s speech framed Congress as the guardian of India’s pluralistic identity, rejecting a “monochrome” nation for a “mural of millions.” “When the Constitution wept, Congress wiped its tears; when democracy bled, Congress bandaged its wounds,” he said, rallying for constitutional redemption over political gains.
