The BJP on Wednesday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ensuring top-notch care for Congress veteran P. Chidambaram after he fainted at Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Ashram due to dehydration.
Modi, alerted to the incident, directed Union Health Minister JP Nadda to oversee the former finance minister’s treatment in his home state of Gujarat, the party said in a release.
Nadda roped in Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel and state BJP chief CR Paatil, who tasked Health Minister Rushikesh Patel with monitoring Chidambaram’s condition at Zydus Hospital. Patel stayed on top of it, and by Wednesday, Chidambaram was discharged.
“Extreme heat caused dehydration, but all tests are normal. I’m perfectly well now. Thank you, all,” the Congress leader posted on X.
The drama unfolded Tuesday during a prayer meeting at the Ashram, hours after Chidambaram attended a Congress Working Committee session at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Memorial. Fellow leaders rushed him to an ambulance when he collapsed.
The BJP framed it as Gujarat’s hospitality shining through: “Regardless of party, we ensure no guest faces trouble,” the release stated, adding that Modi, as a Gujarati, felt a personal duty to step in.
The gesture blends politics with goodwill, with the BJP casting Modi as a leader above partisanship. For Chidambaram, it’s a quick recovery—and a rare nod of thanks across the aisle.
