Former West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee alleged that her car was attacked with bricks and stones during protests in Halisahar on Sunday. Banerjee was travelling to the residence of a party worker who allegedly died in police custody when protesters surrounded her vehicle. The incident triggered a political confrontation, with Banerjee accusing the attackers of putting her life at risk, while the BJP denied any involvement in the violence.

According to the allegations, the protesters stopped around Banerjee’s convoy and smeared mud on her car before allegedly throwing shoes and water bottles. Protesters were also heard raising “Chor bhagao” slogans as police personnel attempted to push the crowd away from the Trinamool Congress leader’s vehicle. The demonstration took place as Banerjee was visiting the family of the party worker whose alleged death in police custody has become a point of political tension in the area.

Speaking to reporters after the incident, Banerjee said unidentified people had thrown stones at her car despite police personnel being present. She claimed the situation could have resulted in a fatal injury if the vehicle’s windows had not been closed. “If my car windows were not closed, it could have split my head open. I could have died,” she said, describing the incident as an attack unlike anything she had previously experienced.

Banerjee also criticised the police response, alleging that the security personnel present at the scene failed to adequately protect her and those travelling with her. She accused the administration of providing protection selectively and claimed that security was being extended to the BJP while her convoy was left vulnerable. The allegations came amid heightened political tensions surrounding the death of the Trinamool Congress worker and the circumstances surrounding the incident in police custody.

The BJP, however, criticised the alleged attack while rejecting any suggestion that the party was responsible for the violence.
