Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday praised the election of Sachin Ahir as the Deputy Chairman of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, describing him as a leader capable of making timely and effective decisions. The remarks came after Ahir was elected unopposed to the post, with the Opposition withdrawing its nomination, clearing the way for his selection.
Fadnavis said Ahir’s long association with senior political leadership and his training under veteran leader Sharad Pawar had shaped his decision-making abilities. He remarked that Ahir “knows when to score a goal,” highlighting what he described as his ability to act at the right moment in critical situations. The Chief Minister also expressed confidence that Ahir would uphold fairness in his new constitutional role.
The Chief Minister further recalled his personal association with Ahir, stating that both were elected together in 1999. He described Ahir as a “fearless worker” with strong grassroots connections, noting that his political career has been shaped by direct engagement with workers and local communities. Fadnavis added that leadership roles in the legislative council require impartiality and a strong sense of justice.

Ahir’s political journey includes multiple terms as a Member of the Legislative Assembly and a stint as Minister of State in 2009. He has been associated with labour movements and trade union work, particularly through organisations representing mill workers. His public engagements, including community festivals and social initiatives, were also highlighted as part of his broader grassroots presence.
Fadnavis also acknowledged the contributions of outgoing Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe, praising her handling of responsibilities during periods of political tension. He said her tenure reflected firmness and administrative capability in managing legislative proceedings.
The Chief Minister concluded by stating that Ahir’s appointment had been carried out in accordance with due process, noting that no procedural irregularities were involved. He also referred to earlier political transitions in the council to suggest continuity in institutional functioning, expressing confidence that the House would continue to operate smoothly under the new leadership.
