The Congress party sharply criticized the BJP on Sunday, highlighting a series of crimes against women in BJP-ruled states and demanding immediate action, including fast-track courts, victim compensation, and enhanced security. Mahila Congress president Alka Lamba, addressing a press conference, condemned the BJP’s failure to ensure justice, citing cases in Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, and Karnataka.
Lamba referenced the tragic death of a 15-year-old girl in Odisha’s Puri district, allegedly set on fire by unidentified assailants, who succumbed to her injuries at AIIMS Delhi. She criticized the police for claiming no one was involved. She also highlighted a case in Odisha’s Fakir Mohan College, where a student who alleged sexual harassment set herself on fire after receiving no justice. In Madhya Pradesh, Lamba noted that 7,418 SC-ST women were raped between 2022 and 2024, as revealed in the state Assembly.
In Chhattisgarh, Lamba accused the police of targeting Christian missionary women under the guise of religious issues. She also slammed a controversial Gujarat traffic police poster suggesting women avoid going out at night to prevent rape, calling it a shameful reflection of the state’s mindset under BJP rule. In Karnataka, Lamba praised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for ensuring justice in the case of Prajwal Revanna, a convicted mass rapist, despite his alleged support from high-profile BJP figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Lamba emphasized that women’s safety remains a critical issue nationwide, and the Mahila Congress will continue its ‘Nyay March’ to demand justice. “The police may try to suppress these demands, but we won’t stop,” she said, calling for fast-track courts to expedite trials, alongside security and compensation for victims’ families. The Congress vowed to intensify its campaign to hold perpetrators accountable and ensure a safer environment for women across India.
