Iran has announced the closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz for shipping transit, escalating tensions in the Gulf amid ongoing diplomatic efforts with the United States. The decision follows Iran's suspension of peace talks with Washington after Israel launched fresh strikes in southern Lebanon, adding uncertainty to an already fragile regional security situation.
According to reports from the semi-official Tasnim News Agency, Iran's joint military command ordered the closure in response to what it described as Israeli violations of a recently agreed ceasefire in southern Lebanon. Iranian authorities characterised the attacks as being carried out in "bad faith" and a "clear breach of commitments," warning that additional measures could follow if hostilities continue.
The latest escalation came after Israeli air strikes and drone attacks reportedly killed at least five people in southern Lebanon on Saturday. Lebanon's National News Agency said warplanes targeted residential buildings across the Nabatieh region, while artillery shelling was also reported before dawn. The strikes occurred only hours after a ceasefire brokered with the involvement of US and Qatari mediators had come into effect.

Despite the closure announcement, Iranian state television reported that the country's delegation had travelled to Switzerland for talks with US officials, signalling that diplomatic channels remain open. The move highlights the complex situation in which negotiations are continuing alongside heightened military tensions and competing claims over ceasefire violations.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important maritime trade routes, handling a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Any disruption to shipping through the narrow waterway is closely watched by international markets and governments, as prolonged restrictions could have major implications for global energy supplies and regional stability.
