The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Manipur unit has filed police complaints targeting alleged “abusive language” directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, intensifying political friction in the state.
Manipur BJP general secretary K Saratkumar, addressing a press conference, condemned remarks made during the Congress’ Voter Adhikar Yatra in Bihar last week. A viral video purportedly captured a Congress leader using a Hindi expletive against Modi’s late mother during the event in Darbhanga, where Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Vadra, and RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav were present. The accused was arrested two days later. “Such an attack on the mother of a nation’s leader is unthinkable in any civilised society,” Saratkumar said.
The BJP also lodged a separate FIR against Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra for her alleged inflammatory comment about Amit Shah. Moitra reportedly said that if Shah fails to curb infiltration from Bangladesh, “the first thing you should do is cut Amit Shah’s head and put it on your table.” Saratkumar called the statement “condemnable” and warned it could incite violence.

Additionally, the BJP filed a complaint against Sakir Ahmed, chairperson of the Manipur Congress’ OBC department, for a social media post claiming the BJP-RSS is stoking communal tensions between Meiteis and Muslims ahead of elections. “We condemn such divisive rhetoric. The BJP is committed to forming a stable government,” Saratkumar asserted.
Manipur remains under President’s Rule following Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s resignation in February, amid ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities that has claimed over 260 lives since May 2023. Saratkumar accused Congress of prolonging the unrest for political gain, stating, “They thrive on chaos to sway elections.”
Regarding speculations about a potential visit by PM Modi to Manipur, Saratkumar clarified, “No official confirmation has been received yet.”
The complaints signal escalating political tensions as Manipur approaches elections, with the BJP sharpening its attacks on opposition parties.
