The Zojila Tunnel, poised to become India’s longest road tunnel and Asia’s longest bi-directional tunnel, is transforming the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway with its ambitious construction. Currently 70% complete, as announced by Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on March 27, the 14.15 km tunnel is set for completion by 2026, slashing travel time across the Zojila Pass from over three hours to just 15 minutes.
Built at an altitude of 11,578 feet in the Himalayan terrain, the project utilizes over 31,000 tonnes of steel supplied by the Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), reinforcing its role in iconic infrastructure like the Chenab Railway Bridge and Atal Tunnel.
Originally estimated at Rs 12,000 crore, the project’s cost has been optimized to Rs 5,500 crore. Employing the New Austrian Tunneling Method, the tunnel features a Smart Tunnel system with CCTV, radio control, uninterrupted power, and ventilation.
This strategic infrastructure will ensure all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Leh, boosting civilian and military mobility while fostering economic growth in the region.
