In a significant boost to Assam’s agricultural community, over 20.31 lakh farmers have received more than Rs 422 crore under the 20th instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, officials announced on Sunday. The disbursement, part of a nationwide initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi on Saturday, underscores the government’s commitment to supporting farmers.
The PM-KISAN scheme, a flagship program of the central government, provides eligible farming families with Rs 6,000 annually, distributed in three equal instalments of Rs 2,000 each. Under this latest tranche, Rs 422.05 crore was directly transferred to the bank accounts of 20.31 lakh farmers across Assam, offering crucial financial support to enhance their livelihoods and agricultural productivity.
Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora praised the initiative, stating on X, “This timely support is a testament to the unwavering commitment of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji towards ensuring dignity, security, and prosperity for our Annadatas.” He emphasized the scheme’s role in empowering farmers and strengthening the state’s agricultural sector.

Launched on February 24, 2019, PM-KISAN is the world’s largest direct benefit transfer (DBT) program, designed to meet the financial needs of farmers and boost agricultural productivity. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded the scheme, noting, “Over the years, this scheme has played a key role in empowering our farmers and giving them a token of recognition from a thankful nation.”
The latest disbursement highlights the government’s ongoing efforts to uplift farmers, reinforcing PM-KISAN’s impact as a transformative initiative for India’s agricultural backbone.
