Petrol and diesel prices across India have seen a sharp upward revision over the past two weeks, with oil marketing companies implementing the fourth increase in just 11 days, taking the total hike to around ₹7.50 per liter. The latest adjustment, announced on Monday, May 25, added about ₹2.60 per liter, following earlier increases of ₹3 on May 15 and two successive hikes of ₹0.90 each on May 19 and May 23. The steady rise in fuel prices has been linked to global uncertainty, including tensions in the US-Iran region, which has influenced crude oil market volatility and triggered fresh pressure on domestic retail rates.
In Delhi, petrol prices have climbed to ₹102.12 per litre, placing the national capital among the relatively lower-priced metros despite the continued surge. At this rate, filling a small 35-liter car tank now costs approximately ₹3,574.20, while a 50-liter SUV tank refill comes to nearly ₹5,106. For two-wheelers with a 12-liter capacity, a full tank refill is now priced at around ₹1,225.40, reflecting the cumulative impact of repeated price revisions within a short span.
In Mumbai, fuel prices remain the highest among major metros, with petrol now costing ₹111.21 per litre after the latest increase. A full 35-liter car tank refill in the financial capital now costs around ₹3,892.25, while a 50-liter SUV tank refill is close to ₹5,560.50. For motorcycles with a 12-liter tank capacity, a complete refill is estimated at ₹1,334.52, further adding to daily commuting costs for residents of the city.

Kolkata has recorded the highest petrol price among the metro cities, with rates reaching ₹113.51 per liter after the latest revision. Under the new pricing structure, filling a 35-liter car tank costs approximately ₹3,972.85, while a 50-liter SUV refill stands at about ₹5,675.50. Two-wheeler users in the city now pay around ₹1,362.12 for a full 12-litre tank, making everyday transportation increasingly expensive for regular commuters.
In Chennai, petrol prices have risen to ₹107.77 per litre following the recent hike cycle, adding pressure on vehicle owners in the southern metro as well. A 35-liter tank refill now costs about ₹3,771.95, while a 50-liter SUV tank refill is close to ₹5,388.50. For motorcycles, a full 12-liter refill comes to approximately ₹1,293.24, showing a uniform upward trend across all major Indian cities in fuel expenditure.
Overall, the continuous fuel price hikes have significantly increased the cost of daily mobility for households across metros, with repeated revisions occurring within a short timeframe. The combination of global oil market fluctuations and domestic pricing adjustments has pushed gasoline above the ₹100 per liter mark in several cities, intensifying concerns over inflationary pressure on transport and essential goods. With no immediate relief in sight, consumers are likely to face sustained higher fuel costs in the coming days.
