The anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district entered its third day on Sunday, with security forces tightening their cordon around militants in a fierce gun battle in the Akhal forest area. Intermittent firing continued since early morning, as joint teams of the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, and Special Operations Group (SOG) employed advanced surveillance tools, including drones, to track the terrorists.
The operation, dubbed ‘Operation Akhal,’ began Friday evening following intelligence about terrorist presence in the dense forest. An initial exchange of fire occurred, but operations paused overnight due to darkness. On Saturday, the cordon was reinforced, and firing resumed, resulting in the deaths of two terrorists, with one more possibly injured.
Officials have yet to confirm the identities or affiliations of the slain militants, suspected to be linked to groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, given recent regional patterns. The operation remains active, with security forces intensifying efforts to neutralize any remaining threats.
This marks the third major encounter in Jammu and Kashmir this week, following operations that killed six terrorists, including those behind the April 2025 Pahalgam attack.
