Heavy rainfall battered Mumbai on Monday, plunging Central Railway’s suburban services into disarray as a goods train stalled between Badlapur and Ambernath stations in Thane district, exacerbating existing delays. The incident, reported at around 12:55 PM, was caused by wheel slip due to waterlogged tracks, leaving thousands of commuters stranded and railway stations overcrowded.
According to a Central Railway spokesperson, the goods train, stuck on the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)-bound track, halted services on the Main Line (CSMT to Kasara). “The train stalled due to heavy rainfall and wheel slip. An assisting engine has been dispatched to move it,” the official said. The disruption compounded delays already plaguing the network since morning, with water accumulation on tracks in low-lying areas like Dadar, Byculla, Masjid, Kurla, and Sion causing trains to run up to 20 minutes behind schedule.
Commuters, many of whom rely on Mumbai’s lifeline suburban trains for daily travel, faced significant inconvenience as trains bound for CSMT were stuck behind the stalled goods train. Crowds swelled at platforms, with frustrated passengers voicing concerns over the lack of timely updates. Commuter groups reported chaotic scenes at major stations, with some travelers stranded for hours.

Mumbai’s monsoon season often brings such disruptions, but Monday’s combination of heavy showers and the goods train breakdown amplified the chaos. Central Railway authorities are working to restore normalcy, but the incident has renewed calls for better infrastructure to mitigate rain-related disruptions. As the city braces for more rainfall, commuters are left hoping for swift action to keep Mumbai’s vital rail network on track.
