In a major stride for India’s first bullet train project, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) announced the completion of a 2.7-kilometer tunnel section between Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai and Shilphata in Thane on Wednesday. This breakthrough, part of the 21-km tunnel, marks a pivotal moment in the ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor, set to slash travel time between these economic powerhouses.
The tunnel, a cornerstone of the USD multi-billion project, includes a 7-km undersea stretch beneath Thane Creek. Of the total length, 16 km is being excavated using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), while the remaining 5 km employs the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) between Shilphata and Ghansoli. To accelerate progress, an Additional Driven Intermediate Tunnel (ADIT) facilitated simultaneous excavation, achieving 4.3 km of cumulative progress, including 1.62 km from the Shilphata side.
NHSRCL has prioritized safety, deploying advanced monitoring systems like ground settlement markers, piezometers, inclinometers, strain gauges, and biometric access controls to protect nearby infrastructure and ecosystems. This milestone underscores India’s push toward cutting-edge transport solutions, promising enhanced connectivity and efficiency.
