In a tragic incident in Bara Haveli Khalsa village, Kaushambi district, a 55-year-old man and his 75-year-old mother were found dead inside their home on Sunday. Police were alerted after neighbors reported no activity in the house, which appeared locked from the inside.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rajesh Kumar Singh said officers entered the locked premises by scaling a wall and discovered the bodies of Vijay Mishra, also known as Makardhwaj, and his mother Maula Devi, lying on separate cots. Preliminary observations indicated that both had vomited prior to their deaths.
“Prima facie, the deaths appear to be due to consumption of a poisonous substance,” ASP Singh said. He added that the exact cause of death will be determined after postmortem reports are completed, which are currently underway at a nearby medical facility.

Local authorities have begun a preliminary investigation, gathering evidence from the house and speaking to neighbors and relatives to understand the circumstances leading up to the deaths. The locked nature of the residence has raised questions about whether the poisoning was accidental or intentional.
Police are also exploring Vijay Mishra’s personal and professional background to ascertain any potential motive or external influence. “All possibilities are being examined, including accidental ingestion, deliberate poisoning, or foul play,” the ASP said, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation.
The incident has left the local community shocked, with residents expressing concern over safety and mental health issues. Authorities have urged anyone with information about the Mishras’ final days to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
