The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day on Wednesday after relentless protests by Opposition MPs demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. The Upper House faced multiple disruptions, with adjournments at 11 AM, noon, and finally at 2 PM, halting all significant business.
As Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal introduced The Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill 2025, Opposition members stormed the Well of the House, raising slogans against the SIR and demanding that Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge be allowed to speak. Bhubaneswar Kalita, in the Chair, adjourned the session amid the chaos.
Earlier, Deputy Chairman Harivansh rejected 25 adjournment notices under Rule 267, including demands to discuss SIR, Delhi slum demolitions, and migrant worker issues. This sparked uproar, with Opposition MPs drowning out proceedings. Despite attempts to proceed with Zero Hour and Question Hour, protests persisted, with CPI’s Sandosh Kumar P raising the SIR issue during his question.

Even a plea to allow MDMK’s Vaiko to speak, given his retiring term, was overshadowed by sloganeering. Tuesday saw similar disruptions, with the SIR issue stalling the Rajya Sabha’s Monsoon session.
