Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan declared in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that government initiatives have significantly boosted farmers’ incomes, with many seeing their earnings more than double. Responding to Congress MP Manickam Tagore’s query about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2022 promise to double farmers’ income, Chouhan highlighted record purchases of farm produce at minimum support prices (MSP), subsidized fertilizers, and insurance claim settlements totaling ₹1.83 lakh crore.
“With full confidence, I say several farmers’ incomes have doubled,” Chouhan asserted, crediting Modi’s leadership. He criticized the previous UPA government for rejecting the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendation to set MSP at 50% above production costs, claiming it would distort markets. “The Modi government implemented this, ensuring farmers’ profits,” he added.
Chouhan’s remarks come amid ongoing debates over agricultural reforms, with the government emphasizing its commitment to farmer welfare through enhanced MSP procurement and financial support, positioning these measures as transformative for India’s agrarian economy.
