A catastrophic 50-foot breach in the Mangeshpur drain sent torrents of water flooding into Delhi’s Jharoda Kalan area, submerging homes in Geetanjali Enclave and nearby parts of Jharoda Kalan village near Baba Haridass Nagar in Dwarka, police reported.
The disaster struck Tuesday evening, with floodwaters reaching up to five feet, swamping low-lying areas within minutes. Emergency response teams, including police and disaster management officials, launched a frantic overnight rescue operation to evacuate stranded residents.
“No casualties have been reported so far. We prioritised evacuating people to safety, relocating them to nearby government schools in Jharoda Kalan,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ankit Singh, who oversaw the operation alongside ACP Najafgarh. Over 30 police personnel were deployed for the effort.

Rescue operations continue as water levels remain high in some areas. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Delhi government’s disaster management teams are assisting. Residents were seen wading through waist-deep water, clutching essential belongings as they were moved to temporary shelters.
“Food and medical aid are being arranged for those in the schools,” DCP Singh added. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the drain to prevent further breaches. “We’ve mobilised all emergency resources, and teams are on high alert. The situation is under constant review,” another official said.
Relief efforts will persist until the floodwaters recede, with officials urging residents to stay vigilant.
