The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has raised an alarm over the devastating impact of US tariffs on Tamil Nadu’s textile industry, particularly in the western region encompassing Tiruppur and Coimbatore. In its mouthpiece "Murasoli", the ruling party questioned the BJP-led Central government’s plans to shield these vital industrial hubs, accusing it of prioritising electoral gains in the region over economic protection.
Tamil Nadu’s western belt, a powerhouse of textile exports, contributes significantly to India’s $1.6 billion textile trade with the US. Tiruppur alone accounts for Rs 12,000 crore in annual exports. However, the recent US tariffs have triggered fears of massive job losses—potentially 5 lakh workers—and the closure of 3,000 industrial units. Exporters, grappling with the tariff burden, have resorted to offering discounts on US shipments, while some have halted production entirely.
“What is PM Modi doing to save Tiruppur and Coimbatore?” asked Murasoli in a scathing editorial. It criticised the BJP for allegedly favouring corporate giants like Adani and Ambani while neglecting Tamil Nadu’s textile industry. The DMK also highlighted the Centre’s decision to increase duty drawbacks for Gujarat’s jewellery exporters, while Tamil Nadu’s industries received no such relief.

Chief Minister MK Stalin has been vocal about the crisis, noting that 31% of Tamil Nadu’s exports are US-bound, far above the national average. On August 28, 2025, he warned that the tariffs have already cost the state Rs 3,000 crore in trade, endangering thousands of livelihoods. While the state has introduced subsidies and support schemes, Stalin emphasised that its resources are limited. He urged the Central government to roll out immediate relief measures, including a special fund package, GST reforms, credit support, and new Free Trade Agreements (FTAs).
The DMK also pointed to demands from Tiruppur’s hosiery trade unions, which have called for urgent action to protect the industry. The western region, historically an AIADMK stronghold with growing BJP influence, is now a battleground for economic survival. “The BJP eyes votes in the western belt, but where is the support for its industries?” Murasoli questioned.
As Tamil Nadu’s textile sector teeters on the brink, all eyes are on the Centre for a response. Will PM Modi step up with a rescue package, or will the region’s economic backbone face further strain?
