Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has issued a passionate plea to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding swift action to address the catastrophic floods ravaging Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. With thousands of families struggling to protect their homes and loved ones, Gandhi emphasised the urgent need for a special relief package, particularly for farmers, and accelerated rescue operations.
In a fiery post on X, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha stated, “Modiji, floods have unleashed massive destruction in Punjab, with the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand equally alarming. The central government’s active support is critical in these trying times.” Gandhi reinforced his demand in a video message, saying, “It’s heartbreaking to watch people fight to save their families. Modi Ji, it’s your government’s duty to act—announce a special relief package now!”
North India is grappling with relentless rains, cloudbursts, and swollen rivers, causing widespread devastation. Punjab is facing its worst floods since 1988, with the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers inundating 12 districts, claiming 29 lives, and affecting over 2.56 lakh people. Rail and road networks are paralysed, and schools remain closed as the region battles the deluge.

In the Himalayan states, the crisis is no less severe. Uttarakhand endured heavy showers on Tuesday, while Himachal Pradesh reported two deaths due to landslides and flash floods, with over 1,000 roads blocked. An orange alert has been issued for Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Kinnaur districts, signalling more heavy rainfall. Shimla, the state capital, has shut all educational institutions, including coaching centres, amid fears of further landslides triggered by continuous downpours.
Gandhi’s call for action underscores the growing frustration over the government’s response to the crisis, as affected states plead for immediate assistance to mitigate the suffering of millions.
