In a dramatic reversal, the Uttar Pradesh government has reportedly scrapped plans to construct a Shivalaya Park within Kanpur’s Gautam Buddha Park, following fierce opposition from Dalit leaders and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati. The controversial Rs 15-crore proposal, which involved building replicas of the 12 Jyotirlingas in a park revered by Buddhists and Ambedkarites, sparked accusations of undermining secular values.
Mayawati, who had slammed the project as “totally inappropriate” on August 31, welcomed the decision on X, stating, “This is welcome, and I thank the UP government for it. I hope such conspiracies are taken seriously elsewhere to protect peace and harmony.” She had previously warned that the project could fuel unrest and hatred.
The Kanpur Municipal Corporation’s plan drew sharp criticism from figures like Azad Samaj Party chief Chandra Shekhar Azad, who argued it disrespected the legacy of Lord Buddha and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The cancellation marks a victory for activists advocating for social harmony, with Mayawati urging the government to remain vigilant against similar divisive proposals.
