The campaign for the Maharashtra civic body elections, including the crucial Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls, gathered fresh momentum on Monday, January 12, 2026, with the State Election Commission stepping in to address allegations of Model Code of Conduct violations.
The controversy erupted after Maharashtra Minister Girish Mahajan announced that the December and January installments under the Ladki Bahin Yojana would be disbursed before Makar Sankranti. The Congress and other opposition parties accused the ruling Mahayuti government of using the scheme to influence voters during the election period. In response, the Maharashtra State Election Commission sought a detailed report from the state government on the matter to ensure compliance with the code.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu BJP chief K. Annamalai’s recent remarks about Mumbai triggered sharp political exchanges in Maharashtra. Aditya Thackeray strongly criticized the statement, while BJP leaders came out in defense. Other notable developments included the Shinde-led Shiv Sena releasing its manifesto for Thane, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi taking a swipe at both the Mahayuti and MVA alliances over their stance on rising Muslim leaders, and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis slamming opposition parties for fielding candidates with criminal backgrounds in Pune.

Raj Thackeray issued a strong warning against any attempts to impose Hindi in the state, and Maharashtra Minister Eknath Shinde predicted a Mahayuti victory in Mira Bhayandar similar to the results in Mumbai and Thane. The BSE and NSE will remain closed on January 15 in view of the polling day.
With campaigning reaching its peak and unusual alliances like the Pawar and Thackeray factions coming together, the elections are shaping up to be one of the most fiercely contested civic polls in recent years. The outcome will have a major impact on the governance of Maharashtra’s key urban centers. Live updates from the campaign trail will continue as the state approaches the January 15 voting day.
