Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Monday called on Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to recover damages from Shiv Sena workers who vandalized Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai’s Khar area, where comedian Kunal Kamra filmed his latest show.
Speaking to reporters, Raut accused Fadnavis of failing to manage the home department, alleging that the incident reflects a prevailing “gunda raj” (hooliganism) in the state capital.
The controversy erupted after Kamra’s performance on Sunday night, during which he sang a satirical version of “Bholi Si Surat” from Dil To Pagal Hai, indirectly mocking Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde with the term “gaddar” (traitor).
The jibe, part of his Naya Bharat special, prompted outrage from Shinde’s supporters, leading to the ransacking of the studio and parts of Hotel Unicontinental, where it is housed. Mumbai police have since filed an FIR against Kamra for alleged defamation, alongside a separate case against approximately 40 Shiv Sena workers for the vandalism.
Raut questioned the disproportionate reaction, noting that Kamra refrained from naming anyone explicitly. “If Fadnavis can vow to recover damages from rioters in Nagpur, why not here?” he demanded, referencing the CM’s stance on recent violence in Nagpur. He further criticized Fadnavis’ leadership, urging the transfer of the Mumbai police commissioner and action against officials who failed to prevent the destruction.
The Sunday night chaos saw Shiv Sena workers storm the venue, smashing furniture and equipment in protest.
Raut’s remarks amplify the political slugfest, with the Sena (UBT) MP accusing the ruling coalition of fostering lawlessness, while the incident reignites debates over free speech and mob retaliation in Maharashtra.
