IIT Kharagpur has entered a strategic partnership with Germany’s University of Bayreuth to establish the Indo-German Centre of Excellence on Innovation, aimed at strengthening global collaboration in research, technology, and entrepreneurship. The new centre will integrate India’s and Germany’s innovation ecosystems to foster sustainable and deep-tech advancements.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the collaboration was signed in Germany by IIT Kharagpur Director Suman Chakraborty and University of Bayreuth President Stefan Leible. The agreement marks a significant milestone in academic and industrial cooperation between the two nations, emphasizing the joint mission of transforming scientific research into real-world innovation.
According to IIT Kharagpur Director Suman Chakraborty, the initiative demonstrates the shared vision of India and Germany to bridge the gap between laboratories and industries. “This partnership reflects our commitment to transform innovation from the lab to life, through collaboration that is both global in scale and local in impact,” he said during the signing ceremony.

University of Bayreuth President Stefan Leible noted that the collaboration is built on mutual strengths in research and innovation. “By uniting our academic strengths and innovation cultures, we are laying the foundation for a future where scientific cooperation becomes synonymous with sustainable and inclusive progress,” he said.
The Indo-German Centre will function as a platform connecting academia, industry, and startups from both countries. It aims to accelerate applied research, technology transfer, and entrepreneurial collaboration. Through this initiative, both institutions seek to promote knowledge exchange, develop next-generation talent, and deliver scalable solutions addressing global challenges like sustainability, clean energy, and digital transformation.
