A 24-year-old woman in Hyderabad has died by suicide weeks after she was allegedly injected with HIV-positive blood by a man whose marriage proposal she had rejected. Police said the tragic incident highlights the severe psychological trauma and social stigma faced by victims in such cases, with investigations currently underway to determine all circumstances surrounding her death.
According to officials, the incident dates back to March 11, when the accused, identified as Manohar, allegedly forced his way into the woman’s residence and injected her with his HIV-infected blood. The act reportedly followed the woman’s decision to cancel their proposed marriage after learning that he had tested positive for HIV. The two were related, and the marriage had initially been arranged by their families.
Police said the woman’s family had insisted on medical testing prior to finalising the alliance, as the accused’s parents were already living with HIV. After his diagnosis was confirmed in September last year, the woman immediately withdrew from the arrangement, which investigators believe triggered the violent act. The accused was arrested soon after the incident and remains in custody.

Nearly a month later, the woman was found hanging at her home on Friday. Family members rushed her to a nearby government hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Authorities indicated that she had been under significant mental stress in the weeks following the assault.
Investigators believe the emotional impact of the incident, including fear of infection, societal stigma, and psychological distress, may have contributed to her decision. A police official stated that while this appears to be a key factor, all possible angles are being examined as part of the ongoing probe.
The case has raised serious concerns about the mental health challenges faced by victims of violent and traumatic crimes, particularly those involving communicable diseases. Authorities have urged the public to approach such issues with sensitivity while reaffirming that further findings will emerge as the investigation progresses.
