The Som river in Haryana surged into a raging torrent on Sunday, swollen by relentless rainfall across Yamunanagar and neighboring Himachal Pradesh over the past few days. The heavy downpour has sparked fears of flooding in several villages, with a breached embankment in Paniwala village exacerbating the crisis, threatening homes and farmland.
The river’s overflow has submerged a critical bridge at Dhanaura village, disrupting connectivity between Haryana’s Ranjitpur and Himachal Pradesh. Local authorities have issued alerts, urging residents in low-lying areas to stay vigilant as water levels continue to rise. Emergency response teams are on standby, with sandbags and temporary barriers being deployed to mitigate damage.
Heavy rainfall also lashed other parts of Haryana, including Panchkula, Kurukshetra, and Ambala, causing waterlogging and traffic disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued showers through Monday, prompting the state administration to coordinate with Himachal Pradesh for real-time updates on river flow from upstream areas. Residents have been advised to avoid riverbanks and plan travel cautiously to ensure safety.
