Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to meet United States President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, in what will be their first face-to-face interaction since the India–Pakistan conflict last year. The meeting, announced by the White House, is likely to focus on strengthening bilateral ties, with trade emerging as a key agenda item.
According to a Trump administration official cited by local media, the two leaders will have an opportunity to hold discussions on ongoing trade issues between India and the United States. The official also indicated that Washington is planning a future visit to India to advance negotiations on a broader bilateral trade agreement, signalling continued engagement between the two sides.
The meeting comes at a crucial time in India–US economic relations. US President Donald Trump has recently expressed confidence that both countries are moving toward a comprehensive trade deal. He also remarked that India had previously maintained high tariffs on American goods, but suggested that the trade dynamics have since shifted in favour of the United States, with growing economic gains.

Trade negotiations between the two countries have already seen progress in recent months. A US delegation recently concluded four days of discussions in New Delhi, which India’s Commerce Ministry described as being conducted in a “spirit of cooperation and pragmatism.” Earlier reports also indicated a breakthrough in February, when both sides reportedly agreed on a large-scale trade framework involving tariff reductions and market access commitments.
Beyond trade, regional and global security issues may also feature in discussions at the G7 Summit. PM Modi is scheduled to attend the high-level gathering in Evian, where a senior US official suggested that G7 coordination could play a role in stabilising sensitive geopolitical flashpoints, including developments linked to the Strait of Hormuz following recent tensions involving Iran.
The upcoming Modi–Trump meeting is being closely watched as a key diplomatic engagement, with expectations that it could further shape the trajectory of India–US relations across trade, security, and strategic cooperation in the months ahead.
