Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi departed on Saturday for her first official visit to Europe since taking office in October. The multi-nation trip includes stops in the United Kingdom and Italy, followed by her participation in the G7 Summit scheduled to be held in Evian, France. The visit is being positioned as an important diplomatic engagement focused on global security and economic cooperation.
During her stay in the United Kingdom and Italy, Prime Minister Takaichi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Discussions are set to cover key geopolitical issues, including developments in East Asia, the Middle East, and the ongoing situation in Ukraine. The meetings are also aimed at reinforcing Japan’s strategic partnerships with both countries.
Alongside security concerns, the leaders are expected to explore expanded cooperation in emerging and critical technologies. These include artificial intelligence, quantum technology, space exploration, semiconductors, and offshore wind power. According to Japanese officials, the discussions will also emphasize strengthening supply chain resilience and advancing collaboration in cutting-edge industrial sectors.

Following her bilateral engagements, Takaichi will attend her first G7 Summit in Evian, France, where leaders of major advanced economies will gather to address pressing global challenges. She stated that discussions would focus on geopolitical crises, including those in the Middle East, Ukraine, and the Indo-Pacific region, as well as broader issues such as energy security and global market stability.
The Prime Minister also outlined plans to push for coordinated action on energy policy among G7 members. This includes opposition to unjust export restrictions, support for strengthening oil stockpiles in Asia, and closer coordination with the International Energy Agency. She also highlighted the importance of cooperation between oil-producing and consuming nations to counter coercive economic practices.
In addition, Japan is expected to propose a joint framework for critical mineral stockpiling cooperation among G7 countries. The initiative aims to build interconnected reserve systems and strengthen supply chain security. Takaichi described these efforts as part of Japan’s broader vision of promoting “Power Asia” and reinforcing the role of the G7 in addressing global economic and security challenges.
