The Haryana Assembly opened its Monsoon session today with heartfelt tributes to former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satyapal Malik, the victims of the devastating June 12 Ahmedabad plane crash, and the tragic April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. The solemn proceedings, led by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, underscored a rare unity as the House honored these significant figures and mourned the recent losses that have shaken the state and beyond.
The assembly paid special homage to Satyapal Malik, a veteran leader who served as governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Goa, Bihar, Meghalaya, and Odisha, passing away at 79 earlier this month in a Delhi hospital. His legacy, marked by bold leadership during a pivotal time in Jammu and Kashmir’s history, was celebrated alongside tributes to former Haryana MLAs Inder Singh Nain and Hari Ram Balmiki, as well as freedom fighter Mangal Singh, all of whom left an indelible mark before their recent departures. Vidhan Sabha Speaker Harvinder Kalyan joined Saini in reading the obituary resolutions, ensuring each name was etched into the session’s memory.
Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda and INLD member Aditya Devilal added their voices, with Hooda passionately arguing that Malik deserved a state funeral, reflecting the late governor’s widespread respect. The assembly extended deep condolences to the grieving families, a gesture that resonated as it recalled the horrific Pahalgam terror attack, where 26 lives, including Indian Navy officer Vinay Narwal from Karnal, were lost to ruthless gunfire at Baisaran meadows. The June Ahmedabad tragedy, where an Air India flight crashed into a hostel complex, killing 241 onboard and 19 on the ground, further deepened the day’s somber tone.
