Former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has clarified his recent comments regarding young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, saying his remark about the teenager “serving drinks” to teammates if he is not included in the playing XI was not intended in a disrespectful manner. Ashwin explained that his comments were aimed at highlighting the value of learning from senior players and gaining experience while being part of the team environment. Ashwin had earlier suggested that Sooryavanshi could spend time on the sidelines and “serve drinks” if he was not selected to play, a phrase that attracted attention among cricket fans.

Addressing the reaction to his statement, the former India spinner said the comment was misunderstood and was not meant to insult the 15-year-old cricketer. He clarified that he was referring to the traditional role of young players who learn by observing senior teammates during their early stages in international cricket. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said, “I had said earlier that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ‘can spend time, can serve someone drinks, can sit outside.’ It was not in a derogatory manner.”

He added that being part of a squad, even without immediate opportunities to play, can provide valuable lessons for a young cricketer trying to understand the demands of the highest level. Sooryavanshi has emerged as one of the most talked-about young talents in Indian cricket after making an impressive start to his career. The teenager made his debut during the T20I series against England and quickly gained attention with his aggressive batting style.
