A shocking incident unfolded in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, where four hotel employees lost their lives and five others remain in critical condition after eating a meal allegedly contaminated with toxins. The incident occurred in Chhatarpur district on Monday evening, sending shockwaves through the region as authorities scrambled to identify the exact cause. The tragedy coincided with the state cabinet meeting being held in the historic temple town, drawing immediate attention from senior officials.

Authorities reported that eight hotel staff members experienced severe vomiting and a rapid decline in their health after consuming rice with potato-cabbage curry on Monday afternoon. Their condition worsened through the night, prompting an urgent transfer to the district hospital. As their symptoms intensified, medical teams referred them to hospitals in Gwalior for advanced treatment. Sadly, three of them died during treatment, while one more died en route, despite efforts to save them.

Dr. Roshan Dwivedi of the Chhatarpur District Hospital stated that the employees fell ill shortly after having lunch at around 3 pm. A specialised health department team has since launched a detailed investigation into the hotel’s kitchen, food quality, and hygiene practices. Dr. Dwivedi confirmed that several victims remain on ventilator support, underscoring the severity of the poisoning. Medical officials are now awaiting forensic reports to determine the exact toxin responsible.

The victims have been identified as Bihari Patel (60), Ramswaroop Kushwaha (47), Pragilal Kushwaha (45), Girja Rajak (35), Roshni Rajak (35), Golu Agnihotri (25), and Ravi (19)—all residents of Khajuraho. Among them, Pragilal, Girja, and Ramswaroop died at the Gwalior hospital, while another succumbed during transportation. Civil Surgeon Sharad Chaurasia confirmed that more patients were shifted to Gwalior due to their deteriorating condition and the need for specialised care.

Chhatarpur Collector Parth Jaiswal expressed deep grief over the deaths and announced financial assistance of ₹20,000 for the families of the deceased and affected individuals. He emphasised that the administration is treating the matter with utmost seriousness, ensuring that every food sample taken from the hotel is sent for forensic examination. The results are expected to play a crucial role in determining whether the tragedy stemmed from negligence, contamination, or deliberate malpractice.

The incident has sparked widespread concern among locals and authorities alike, raising questions about food safety standards in commercial kitchens across the state. As investigations continue, the community of Khajuraho mourns the loss of its residents, hoping for swift action against anyone responsible and praying for the recovery of the surviving victims.
