The body of a 15-year-old boy who went missing after falling into an open drain in southeast Delhi's Jasola village was recovered on Tuesday, four days after the incident. The teenager, identified as Mithun, had reportedly fallen into the drain on Saturday morning while chasing a kite.

Mithun, a Class 8 student, went missing at around 11 am on Saturday, prompting his family and authorities to suspect that he had fallen into the drain near his home. His family, originally from Uttar Pradesh, lives in the area and works as labourers in Delhi. A search operation was launched soon after the teenager was reported missing.

A multi-agency rescue effort was conducted to locate the boy, involving the Delhi Fire Service, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), rescue personnel and divers. The search continued for four days before Mithun's body was finally found on Tuesday. The prolonged operation involved teams working in and around the drain to trace the missing teenager.

Following the incident, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) suspended a junior engineer posted in the South East (Central) Zone for alleged dereliction of duty. The civic body also said disciplinary proceedings were being initiated against the official in connection with the incident.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed strong displeasure and deep sorrow over the incident, according to a Chief Minister's Office official cited by PTI. Gupta directed the chief secretary to obtain information about the jurisdiction of the drain and ordered action against the official held responsible for the lapses.

The incident has drawn attention to the risks posed by open and inadequately secured drains in residential areas, particularly where children and pedestrians regularly move. The recovery of Mithun's body ended the four-day search, while the MCD's disciplinary proceedings are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the open drain and the alleged failure in civic oversight.
