Delhi has surpassed 250 megawatts of rooftop solar capacity, marking a significant stride toward sustainable energy, with ambitions to double this to 500 MW by 2027 under the PM Surya Ghar-Muft Bijli Yojana. Minister for Social Welfare and Cooperation Ravinder Indraj announced the milestone on October 30 during the Eighth General Assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) at Kilokari, emphasising streamlined subsidy processes and faster grid connections to accelerate adoption.
The initiative aligns with Delhi's new solar policy envisioning "every rooftop as a power plant," leveraging the capital's urban density for decentralised generation amid limited land availability. This progress supports national goals under the scheme, which has facilitated over 10 lakh installations nationwide, offering subsidies up to 60% for systems up to 2 kW and low-interest loans.
Despite peak summer demands exceeding 8,000 MW, the Delhi government has maintained an uninterrupted power supply, even in remote areas, through innovative integration of renewables and digital technologies. Indraj highlighted the city's reliance on solar energy and smart grids to combat pollution and ensure reliability, praising BSES's Janakpuri digital distribution division as a replicable model for India. Complementing this, efforts to electrify 80% of public transport by 2030 include expanding EV charging infrastructure and reducing emissions in a metropolis prone to severe air quality crises.

Indraj joined global representatives in touring the Kilokari Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), South Asia's largest standalone utility-scale facility at 20 MW (40 MWh), commissioned in May 2025 by BSES Rajdhani Power Limited. The system bolsters reliability for nearly one lakh South Delhi residents by providing peak-load support twice daily, integrating seamlessly with rooftop solar and smart grids. Over 60 delegates from 40 countries visited the site, underscoring India's leadership in clean energy transitions.
Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Delhi's green push exemplifies urban innovation in renewable adoption, positioning the capital as a beacon for developed, eco-friendly India amid global climate imperatives. The ISA assembly's focus on solar finance and manufacturing further amplified these achievements, with the Kilokari BESS showcasing practical advancements in energy storage for resilient grids. As installations grow, this milestone not only curbs fossil fuel dependence but also empowers households with free electricity, fostering a smarter, cleaner urban ecosystem.
