Youth should develop interdisciplinary interests, broaden their reading and build knowledge across different fields to contribute to the all-round development of society, retired chemistry professor M.Y. Karidurganavar said in Bagalkot on Tuesday. He was speaking after inaugurating a one-day national seminar titled ‘Recent Advances in Interdisciplinary Sciences for a Sustainable Future’, organised by BVV Sangha’s Basaveshwar Science College. Karidurganavar said young people should make efforts to look beyond the boundaries of their individual subjects and understand how knowledge from different disciplines can complement one another.
Karidurganavar, a retired chemistry professor at Karnatak University, Dharwad, said students should cultivate a wider reading habit and continuously expand their knowledge by learning from different areas of study. He emphasised that interdisciplinary learning can help young people develop broader perspectives and understand issues from multiple viewpoints. Such an approach, he said, can also enable students to apply their academic knowledge in ways that are useful to society and contribute to wider development.
He also underlined the responsibility of higher education institutions in creating an environment that encourages students to connect education with societal needs. Colleges and universities, he said, should foster scientific thinking among students and encourage them to approach questions with curiosity and an open mind. Developing a research-oriented mindset, he added, can help students move beyond the conventional approach of simply acquiring academic knowledge and instead encourage them to explore, analyse and apply what they learn.

The retired professor further stressed the need for students to develop a socially conscious outlook alongside their academic and scientific interests. He said knowledge gained through education should be used constructively for the benefit of society. By combining scientific thinking with awareness of social needs, young people can develop a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges around them and contribute more effectively to addressing them.
The national seminar focused on recent advances in interdisciplinary sciences and their relevance to creating a sustainable future. Organised by BVV Sangha’s Basaveshwar Science College, the one-day programme provided an academic platform centred on the importance of connecting different areas of scientific knowledge. The theme of the seminar reflected the growing relevance of interdisciplinary approaches in understanding complex issues and exploring ways in which scientific knowledge can contribute to sustainable development.
Karidurganavar’s remarks placed particular emphasis on the role of youth and educational institutions in promoting a broader approach to learning. His call for students to read widely, develop interdisciplinary interests and adopt a research-oriented and socially conscious outlook highlighted the importance of using education beyond individual academic disciplines. The message also underscored the need to connect knowledge with practical societal development and encourage young people to use their learning for the broader progress of society.
