Speculation over a possible reshuffle in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s council of ministers has intensified following a meeting between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday. The discussion has fuelled political buzz within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with leaders indicating that a broader organisational and ministerial review may be underway ahead of key electoral cycles.
The meeting comes amid a series of recent political developments, including the resignation of Union minister George Kurian, who was not renominated to the Rajya Sabha by the BJP. His exit has been viewed by party insiders as part of a wider recalibration exercise that could precede a formal reshuffle of ministerial responsibilities. The timing of these changes has also drawn attention as Parliament prepares for its monsoon session.
Party leaders familiar with internal discussions have suggested that the anticipated reshuffle may extend beyond simply filling vacant positions. According to these leaders, the party leadership is expected to evaluate ministerial performance, regional balance, and evolving political requirements within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The review is believed to be part of a broader strategy to strengthen governance delivery while aligning representation with electoral priorities across states.

Additional changes have also emerged in recent weeks, including the end of Rajya Sabha terms for ministers such as Ravneet Singh Bittu, who has not been renominated. Meanwhile, ministers Pankaj Choudhary and Harsh Malhotra have been reassigned organisational roles in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi respectively. The BJP continues to follow its “one person, one post” principle, which aims to separate organisational responsibilities from ministerial duties to ensure functional clarity within the party structure.
Another BJP leader indicated that electoral strategy is likely to play a key role in any upcoming reshuffle. States such as West Bengal are expected to receive increased representation in the Union government, reflecting the party’s focus on expanding its national footprint. The leadership is also reportedly considering inputs from alliance partners as the NDA seeks to maintain cohesion among its constituents ahead of upcoming elections.
Recent political shifts within the NDA have also altered parliamentary dynamics. The defection of six Shiv Sena (UBT) Lok Sabha members to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena has increased the latter’s strength to 13 members in the Lower House, making it the second-largest NDA constituent after the Telugu Desam Party, which holds 16 seats. The Janata Dal (United) follows with 12 seats, underscoring the importance of coalition management in the alliance’s overall strategy.
As discussions continue within the ruling party, the combination of ministerial performance reviews, coalition balancing, and electoral planning is expected to shape the contours of any forthcoming reshuffle. While no official announcement has been made, political observers anticipate that decisions could be aligned with both governance priorities and upcoming electoral calculations.
