Breast cancer is among the most common cancers affecting women in India, making awareness of possible warning signs important for timely medical evaluation. Raipur-based oncologist Dr Jayesh Sharma recently outlined symptoms that may appear in the early stages as well as changes that can occur as the disease progresses, while emphasising that unusual breast changes should not be ignored.

According to Sharma, a lump remains one of the most common warning signs of breast cancer. A lump may feel like an area of the breast that has become harder or noticeably different from the surrounding tissue. However, not every breast lump is cancerous, and a person cannot determine its nature through touch alone. Any new or unusual lump should therefore be assessed by a healthcare professional.

Sharma also noted that breast cancer lumps are often painless, meaning people should not wait for pain before seeking medical advice. In some cases, an abnormal lump-like sensation may instead be noticed in the armpit. Changes involving the nipple can also require attention, including persistent soreness that does not heal or unusual discharge. Discharge from only one breast, particularly if it is dark or blood-stained, warrants medical assessment.

As breast cancer progresses, it can cause changes to the skin over the breast. These may include redness, pain or hardening of an area. Such changes can be associated with more advanced disease, but people should not wait for them to appear before seeking medical help. Early evaluation is important because treatment options and outcomes can depend significantly on the stage at which cancer is detected.

Sharma also cautioned against assuming that breast cancer cannot occur in the absence of a family history. He noted that most breast cancers occur in people without a family history of the disease. Consequently, individuals should pay attention to persistent or unusual breast or armpit changes regardless of whether other family members have had breast cancer.

Anyone who notices a new lump, persistent nipple changes, unusual discharge, skin changes or another breast-related problem that does not resolve should consult a doctor for an examination. A breast surgeon or other appropriately qualified healthcare professional can determine whether further tests are needed. A symptom alone cannot confirm breast cancer, and proper diagnosis requires medical evaluation and, when indicated, diagnostic testing.
