Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday extended glowing praise to Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) parliamentary meeting, commemorating Shah’s achievement as India’s longest-serving home minister. The celebration took place at the Parliament Library Building, even as the Monsoon Session remained mired in a legislative deadlock.
Amit Shah, who took office on May 30, 2019, has now completed 2,258 days in the role as of August 4, 2025, surpassing the previous record of 2,256 days held by BJP stalwart Lal Krishna Advani. The day also coincides with a key political milestone: the August 5, 2019, announcement of Article 370’s abrogation, a decision Shah championed, which revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and marked a major shift in India’s constitutional and security framework.
Known for his firm administrative style and strategic acumen, Amit Shah has been a key architect of the BJP’s national growth and internal policy agenda. A close confidant of Prime Minister Modi since their early political careers in Gujarat, Shah has steered major initiatives in national security, counter-terrorism, and law enforcement reform. His tenure has been marked by the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act, crackdown on insurgency, and coordination of COVID-19 response mechanisms at the national level.
Before Shah, the record for the longest-serving home minister was jointly held by Congress veteran Govind Ballabh Pant (1955–1961, 6 years and 56 days) and Advani (1998–2004). NDA leaders hailed Shah’s tenure as transformative, crediting his leadership for reshaping India's internal security landscape and pushing through key legislative reforms with unwavering resolve.
