Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives caused by a devastating cloudburst in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district, which triggered flash floods in high-altitude Dharali villages. The disaster, which struck the key stopover en route to Gangotri, damaged or swept away numerous homes, hotels, and homestays, claiming at least four lives and leaving several people missing.
In a Hindi post on X, Gandhi offered condolences to affected families and urged the state administration to accelerate relief and rescue operations. He called on Congress leaders and workers to collaborate with authorities to provide maximum support to victims. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress general secretary, echoed his sentiments, expressing grief and appealing for immediate aid, compensation, and rescue efforts.
The cloudburst, a recurring menace in the Indian Himalayas, underscores the region’s vulnerability to extreme weather, worsened by climate change. Similar incidents, like the July 26 Rudraprayag landslides and June 29 cloudburst at Silai Band, highlight the urgent need for robust disaster management. Gandhi’s appeal signals a push for swift action to mitigate the ongoing crisis in Uttarakhand.
