In a surprising shake-up of India’s cleanliness rankings, Ahmedabad has been crowned the cleanest big city in the country, pushing longtime champion Indore into a brand-new elite category—the ‘Super Swachh League Cities’. The results were announced on Thursday as part of the government’s annual Swachh Survekshan 2024-25.
This year’s rankings saw Bhopal and Lucknow take the second and third spots respectively in the cleanest big cities list, while Indore, Surat, Navi Mumbai, and Vijayawada were elevated to the newly formed ‘Super Swachh’ league for their exceptional and consistent performance in urban sanitation.
The Super Swachh League isn’t just about being clean—it’s about setting national benchmarks. Indore, once unbeatable in the top rankings, now leads this exclusive group of cities recognized for going above and beyond in cleanliness standards.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs revealed that over 14 crore citizens participated in this year’s cleanliness survey, conducted across 4,500 cities through field visits, app feedback, and social media engagement.
In the 3 to 10 lakh population category, Noida emerged as the cleanest, followed by Chandigarh and Mysore.
President Droupadi Murmu presented awards to the winners at a high-profile ceremony attended by Union Minister Manohar Lal and other dignitaries. Officials emphasized the survey's 2024–25 theme: “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”, with over 3,000 assessors conducting 45 days of rigorous inspections.
The introduction of new categories like ‘Swachh Shahar’ aims to motivate emerging cities, with Ahmedabad now leading the charge.
This year’s awards not only recognize past champions but also shine a light on rising stars in the race for a cleaner India.
