South Korean YouTuber Kim Se-ui, who runs the entertainment commentary channel Hover Lab, has been arrested in connection with a high-profile defamation controversy involving actor Kim Soo-hyun, after investigators alleged that he circulated AI-manipulated material and fabricated evidence to support claims against the actor. The arrest marks a significant escalation in a scandal that has gripped South Korea’s entertainment industry for months, centering on allegations that Kim Soo-hyun had once been in a relationship with late actress Kim Sae-ron while she was still a minor.
The claims initially surfaced online and rapidly spread across social media, triggering intense public scrutiny and widespread debate about celebrity privacy, digital misinformation, and media ethics. Authorities in Seoul reportedly obtained an arrest warrant from the Seoul Central District Court after arguing that Kim Se-ui posed a risk of evidence tampering and could potentially obstruct the ongoing investigation. Police sources also stated that key materials disseminated through his channel may have been digitally altered or generated using artificial intelligence tools.
A central piece of the controversy involved an alleged audio recording said to feature Kim Sae-ron discussing aspects of the relationship. However, investigators now claim the recording was produced using AI voice-cloning technology rather than being an authentic conversation. In addition, certain text messages and screenshots circulated online have also been flagged as potentially manipulated to reinforce the allegations.

The case intensified after the issue resurfaced months following Kim Sae-ron’s death at the age of 24, further amplifying public sensitivity and media attention around the claims. The renewed scrutiny placed Kim Soo-hyun under significant professional pressure, reportedly affecting endorsement deals and public appearances. In response to the arrest, Kim Se-ui denied wrongdoing in court proceedings and criticized the legal process. According to reports, he argued that the warrant did not properly establish factual grounds and indicated his intention to pursue legal action against investigators and prosecutors.
Kim Soo-hyun’s agency welcomed the arrest, stating that the “truth has been proven” and maintaining that the allegations promoted by Hover Lab were baseless. The agency also reiterated the actor’s earlier public stance, referencing his March 2025 press conference in which he acknowledged having briefly dated Kim Sae-ron but insisted the relationship began only after she had reached adulthood.
He has consistently rejected claims of misconduct, stating, “I can’t admit to something I didn’t do,” and adding that he intended to clear his name through evidence and legal process. The case has become a focal point in South Korea’s broader debate over AI-generated content and online misinformation, particularly in high-profile celebrity disputes. With investigations ongoing, authorities are now examining the extent of digital manipulation involved and whether additional individuals may have contributed to the dissemination of altered material.
