More than 1.5 million Muslim pilgrims have begun the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca, gathering in the holy city’s vast tent encampment in Mina as the religious rites unfold amid heightened geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East. The pilgrimage, one of Islam’s five pillars, has drawn worshippers from across the world despite ongoing regional tensions and concerns over conflict.
The pilgrims, dressed in traditional white garments symbolising unity and equality, arrived in Mina after performing the tawaf at the Grand Mosque, circling the Kaaba seven times as part of the opening rituals. The movement into Mina marks the beginning of the structured sequence of rites that will continue over several days and culminate at Mount Arafat.
This year’s Hajj is taking place against the backdrop of continued uncertainty in the region, including mixed diplomatic signals regarding a possible extension of a ceasefire involving Iran and discussions around reopening critical trade routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. While the Saudi authorities have sought to separate the pilgrimage from regional conflict, the broader geopolitical climate has inevitably formed part of the context surrounding the event.

Officials in Saudi Arabia have emphasised extensive security and logistical preparations to ensure the safety of pilgrims, including enhanced monitoring systems and defensive measures around key religious sites. Reports from state-linked channels have highlighted the deployment of air defence systems on the outskirts of Mecca as part of precautionary arrangements.
Despite external tensions and challenging weather conditions, with temperatures expected to exceed 40°C, pilgrims have continued to express a strong sense of spiritual fulfilment. Many participants described the journey as a lifelong aspiration, with individuals from various countries reflecting on the emotional significance of finally reaching Islam’s holiest site.
The Hajj rituals will continue over the coming days, with the central rite expected at Mount Arafat, where pilgrims gather in prayer and reflection. The event is anticipated to conclude with traditional rites in Mina, as millions complete a pilgrimage that remains one of the most significant annual religious gatherings in the world.
