Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the Maldives on Friday for a two-day visit, greeted by President Mohamed Muizzu and a vibrant traditional dance performance by children. As the chief guest for the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day on July 26, Modi’s visit marks a significant thaw in bilateral relations, strained since Muizzu’s presidency began in November 2023.
Modi, fresh from securing a landmark trade deal in the UK, will hold extensive talks with Muizzu to advance a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership. The visit, the first state visit hosted by Muizzu, coincides with the 60th anniversary of India-Maldives diplomatic ties. Modi is set to inaugurate several India-assisted development projects, reinforcing cooperation for peace and prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted the visit’s importance, noting Modi’s role in strengthening ties. In his departure statement, Modi expressed eagerness to deepen collaboration, emphasizing regional stability.
