In a chilling case that has shocked the UK, 39-year-old Indian-origin man Surjit Singh has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 15 years for the brutal murder of his 76-year-old mother, Mohinder Kaur, at their home in Birmingham. The sentencing, handed down at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday, revealed that the fatal attack was triggered by a heated argument over a television remote control, fueled by Singh’s intoxication.
West Midlands Police described the incident as a “senseless killing” that devastated a family. Detective Inspector Nick Barnes expressed sympathy, stating, “This senseless killing has torn apart a family, and our thoughts remain with everyone affected.” The tragedy unfolded in September 2024 at the family’s residence in Birmingham’s Soho area, where Singh, who served as a carer for his widowed mother, lost control after she criticized his drunken state.
Court proceedings revealed that Singh, under the influence of cocaine and alcohol, chased his elderly and frail mother around their home, repeatedly kicking and stamping on her in a “sustained attack over a considerable period of time.” Mohinder Kaur was found lifeless on the living room floor after a relative, alerted by Singh, called emergency services. Police forced entry into the home and rushed Kaur to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where she was pronounced dead due to injuries consistent with multiple blows. The exact weapon, if any, and the precise motive remain unclear.

Singh fled the scene but later returned, where he was arrested. In custody, he admitted, “I didn’t mean to do it. I just lost my head,” showing remorse but failing to undo the tragedy. The court heard how the attack was particularly brutal, with the elderly victim unable to defend herself against her son’s violent outburst.
The case has sparked outrage in the local community, highlighting issues of domestic violence and substance abuse. Singh’s life sentence ensures he will serve at least 15 years before being eligible for parole, but for Mohinder Kaur’s loved ones, the loss is irreparable. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of unchecked anger and addiction, leaving a family and community grappling with grief.
