India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, on Thursday presented his credentials to Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin, reaffirming New Delhi’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors. The formal ceremony took place at Bangabhaban, the official residence of the Bangladeshi President.
During the meeting, Trivedi conveyed greetings from the Government and people of India and emphasized the importance of further deepening the multifaceted partnership between the two neighboring countries. According to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, the envoy reiterated India’s commitment to advancing collaboration for the mutual welfare and prosperity of both nations, reflecting the longstanding ties shared by India and Bangladesh.
In a significant development aimed at boosting people-to-people exchanges, Trivedi also announced the resumption of tourist visa services for Bangladeshi citizens. The announcement was made during his visit to the Indian Visa Application Centre at Jamuna Future Park in Dhaka. Tourist visa issuance had remained largely suspended since the unrest and demonstrations that took place in Bangladesh in July 2024.

Under the renewed visa programme, applications for general travel visas will be accepted from June 28, while urgent medical visas will continue to be processed on humanitarian grounds. Visa services will initially be available through centres located in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Sylhet, and Khulna, with plans for a gradual expansion across the country. Officials noted that the move is expected to facilitate greater travel, business, and cultural exchanges between the two nations.
The Indian High Commission highlighted that the Jamuna Future Park visa centre is among India’s largest visa facilitation facilities and serves as a major hub for bilateral interactions. Trivedi reviewed ongoing operations at the centre and discussed measures to improve services for applicants. The reopening of tourist visa services is being viewed as an important step in restoring normal cross-border mobility and strengthening interpersonal connections.
Trivedi arrived in Bangladesh on June 12 through the Petrapole-Benapole land border crossing, a route that officials described as symbolically significant given the central role of border connectivity in India-Bangladesh relations. His appointment comes at a time when both countries are seeking to enhance cooperation in trade, connectivity, cultural exchanges, and regional development, reinforcing a partnership that remains one of South Asia’s most important bilateral relationships.
