Chinese President Xi Jinping has reaffirmed Beijing’s support for Myanmar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity during high-level talks with Myanmar’s military leadership in Beijing, according to state media reports. The statement came during a meeting with Myanmar’s military chief and acting president Min Aung Hlaing, who is on a five-day official visit to China aimed at strengthening bilateral ties amid ongoing political and security challenges in Myanmar.
During the meeting held at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, Xi Jinping said China “firmly supports” Myanmar in safeguarding its sovereignty and development path suited to its national conditions. He emphasized that both nations have “stood together through thick and thin,” highlighting the long-standing strategic partnership between the two neighbours. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that Xi also encouraged Myanmar to balance development and security while pursuing policies that enjoy domestic public support.
China has remained Myanmar’s most important diplomatic and economic partner since the 2021 military coup that ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. While Western countries imposed sanctions and suspended engagement with Myanmar’s military leadership, Beijing continued its engagement and has increasingly positioned itself as a key regional power broker in the country’s internal conflict.

The talks also addressed regional security concerns, particularly the rise of cross-border cybercrime, telecom fraud, online gambling, and drug trafficking along the China–Myanmar border. Xi called for stronger joint efforts to “crack down hard” on these activities, which Chinese authorities say have targeted their citizens. The issue has become a growing point of friction between the two countries in recent years, especially with the proliferation of scam networks operating in border regions.
Min Aung Hlaing’s visit to Beijing comes amid renewed diplomatic engagement between the two sides. According to reports, he was accorded a formal welcome and also visited China’s aerospace facilities earlier in the trip. He is expected to hold further meetings with senior Chinese officials, including Premier Li Qiang and top legislator Zhao Leji, as both countries seek to deepen cooperation in defence, infrastructure, and economic sectors.
Observers note that China’s involvement in Myanmar remains strategically significant, as Beijing continues to supply military assistance while also mediating limited ceasefires with armed ethnic groups along the shared border. At the same time, Myanmar’s ongoing civil conflict and its growing importance in global rare earth mineral supply chains have further increased its geopolitical relevance for China’s industrial and energy ambitions.
