Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched the ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’, a nationwide 100-week campaign aimed at creating awareness among young people about the dangers of substance abuse. Addressing the youth during the virtual launch, Modi urged citizens to take a pledge against drug addiction, warning that while drugs may provide a temporary “high”, they can negatively impact an individual’s entire career and personal life.

Emphasising the importance of a healthy and confident youth population, the prime minister said that staying away from substance abuse was essential for building a developed India. He stated that the country’s youth must remain physically and mentally fit, as they represent the future of the nation. Modi also highlighted concerns over drug trafficking, stating that enemy countries attempt to use the supply of narcotics as part of their broader terror strategies by targeting young people.

During the launch, Modi also addressed the social stigma associated with addiction recovery. He said that individuals who overcome substance abuse should be recognised as fighters and supported by society rather than being isolated. He urged families to openly communicate with affected members, seek professional assistance and avoid hiding addiction concerns due to fear of social judgment.

The prime minister said Indian traditions emphasise the role of community support, yoga and meditation in helping individuals overcome addiction. He described the campaign as a collective responsibility involving individuals, families and society. The initiative will continue for 100 weeks, with activities organised every Sunday focusing on sports, art, culture, meditation, spirituality and community service to spread awareness about the harmful effects of drugs.

Modi also highlighted the government's actions against drug trafficking, stating that strict measures have been taken against those involved in the illegal trade. He said enforcement agencies have increased arrests and seized narcotics worth thousands of crores of rupees as part of efforts to curb the drug menace across the country.

The ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’ aims to encourage young people to become ambassadors of a drug-free society through public participation programmes. Activities under the campaign will include sports events, awareness drives, walkathons, cultural programmes, street plays, meditation sessions and community discussions. The initiative builds on the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan launched in 2020 to promote a drug-free India.
