A Calgary taxi driver became an unlikely hero last weekend when he helped a couple deliver a baby during a late-night ride to the hospital. Hardeep Singh Toor, who has been driving cabs for four years, picked up a pregnant woman and her partner on a frigid winter night and ended up delivering a newborn en route to Peter Lougheed Centre, local media reported.
Toor recalled answering the urgent call and immediately sensing the seriousness of the situation. “It was a pregnant lady, and her companion was helping her get in the cab. She was in pain,” he told CTV. With temperatures around –23°C and stormy, slippery roads, he realized that waiting for an ambulance could delay critical care.
The drive, which Toor described as the “longest 30 minutes” of his life, was marked by tense moments as the baby arrived in the back seat just blocks from the hospital. “Her body language was telling me she did not have the time … I decided to drive,” Toor said, focusing entirely on getting the family to safety despite the extreme winter conditions.

As soon as they arrived, hospital staff rushed to assist the couple and the newborn. Toor stepped back and allowed the medical team to take over, learning that both mother and baby were in good health. “It’s my first experience getting two people in and three people out. It was a proud moment,” he said.
The story has touched hearts across Canada, highlighting the compassion and quick thinking of frontline service workers in urgent situations. Toor’s presence of mind and bravery ensured the safe arrival of the newborn without incident, earning him recognition from both the family and the local media.
This extraordinary incident also serves as a reminder of the unpredictable challenges faced by taxi drivers and the vital role they can play in emergencies. Hardeep Singh Toor’s calm under pressure transformed what could have been a stressful night into a remarkable story of courage, compassion, and community support.
