A devastating accident claimed the life of one pedestrian and left another critically injured when a speeding white Mahindra Thar SUV veered onto a pavement near the Gyarah Murti landmark in Delhi’s high-security Chanakyapuri area on August 10, 2025. The incident, occurring around 7:30 am, saw the vehicle, registered in Uttar Pradesh, swerve from the direction of central Delhi and strike two men walking on the pavement along Mother Teresa Road.
Police rushed both victims to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where one was declared dead on arrival, and the other remains under treatment. The driver was apprehended at the scene, and the SUV, which sustained visible damage with its left front tyre nearly detached, was seized. New Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Devesh Kumar Mahla oversaw the response, with forensic teams examining the site.
Social media posts suggest liquor bottles were found in the vehicle, prompting investigations into possible drunk driving. The Delhi Police are probing whether alcohol contributed to the crash, which occurred in a high-security zone near Rashtrapati Bhavan. This tragedy follows a grim trend, with Delhi recording 556 fatal accidents from January to May 2025, per police data.
