Tamil Nadu’s State Cyber Command Centre has made a major breakthrough in a China-linked investment fraud, identifying eight victims across India, the state police announced Wednesday. The victims, hailing from Andhra Pradesh (2), Maharashtra (2), Rajasthan (1), Delhi (1), Jammu & Kashmir (1), and Uttar Pradesh (1), were targeted by scammers promising high returns, luring them into transferring large sums of money.
Led by SP-Cyber Crime Wing Shahnaz Illyas, the investigation uncovered mule accounts directly linked to Chinese fraudsters. The Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing promptly collaborated with bank Fraud Risk Management Teams to place these accounts under surveillance, preventing significant financial losses. The police noted that the victims had not yet filed formal complaints, suggesting the scam is ongoing and potentially expanding.
The Tamil Nadu police alerted cyber units in the affected states, which have now registered cases and initiated action. “This pre-emptive intervention and freezing of suspicious transactions stopped a huge sum from reaching international cybercriminals,” the State Cyber Command Centre stated. The operation underscores Tamil Nadu’s proactive efforts in combating sophisticated cross-border cybercrimes.
