A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was arrested after allegedly beating his wife to death at Badhalian village in Punjab's Hoshiarpur district, police said. The accused, identified as Amarjit Singh, was reportedly on leave when the incident took place. He allegedly told his wife's family that she had fallen from the roof of their house. The victim, identified as Rama, was allegedly assaulted during the intervening night of August 13 and 14.

According to her family, they received a call from Amarjit on August 14 informing them that Rama had accidentally fallen from the roof and had been taken to a hospital. Her relatives rushed to the hospital after receiving the information, but found that she had already died. Rama's father, Ram Chand, subsequently raised suspicions over the circumstances of her death. He alleged that his daughter had been beaten by Amarjit and pointed to multiple injury marks found across her body.

The allegations prompted the police to investigate whether the injuries were consistent with a fall or indicated an assault. According to the victim's father, Amarjit had a history of alcohol use and frequently subjected Rama to physical abuse. Ram Chand told police that his daughter had allegedly faced repeated violence during the marriage. The family has alleged that the injuries on her body were evidence of a sustained assault rather than an accidental fall from a roof.

Police arrested Amarjit following the allegations and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Rama's death. Investigators are expected to examine medical findings, the nature and location of the injuries and other available evidence to establish how she died. The case has also brought attention to allegations of domestic violence that had reportedly been raised by the victim's family. Rama's father alleged that the accused's behaviour had previously included physical abuse, although the claims will be subject to investigation by authorities. Police will also examine the circumstances under which the initial account of a fall from the roof was provided to the family. The alleged attempt to explain the death as an accidental fall has become a key part of the investigation.

Authorities will have to determine whether Rama sustained her injuries from a fall or whether she was assaulted before her death. Evidence from the hospital, forensic examination and the crime scene is expected to assist investigators in establishing the circumstances. The arrest of the BSF personnel comes as police continue their inquiry into the alleged killing.
