Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has resigned from the primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), bringing an end to days of speculation over his political future within the organisation. The party high command has accepted his resignation, marking a significant development in the state’s political landscape.
Annamalai’s resignation comes in the aftermath of his recent visit to New Delhi, where he held discussions with senior BJP leaders, including party national president Nitin Nabin and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. According to party sources, the meetings involved detailed conversations on the functioning of the BJP in Tamil Nadu, during which Annamalai is believed to have raised several concerns and grievances with the central leadership.
Although reports of his possible exit had been circulating for several days, official confirmation from the BJP on Friday ended uncertainty surrounding his position in the party. The development has drawn attention due to Annamalai’s prominence in Tamil Nadu politics and his previous role as the state party chief.

Following his resignation, Annamalai is expected to address the media and the public through social media later in the day. In a post shared online, he indicated that he would interact with supporters at noon to share his thoughts and explain the circumstances that led to his decision to step down, describing it as an open and personal conversation.
Meanwhile, BJP sources stated that the party leadership had taken note of the concerns raised by Annamalai and assured that they would be addressed within the party framework. They characterised the matter as an internal organisational issue and expressed confidence that it would not disrupt the functioning of the party in Tamil Nadu.
Despite the development, party insiders downplayed speculation regarding any impact on the BJP’s organisational strength or alliance dynamics in the state. They maintained that the party remains focused on strengthening its presence in Tamil Nadu and continues to be optimistic about its political prospects in the region.
